The Four Pillars of Wellbeing

In recent years, a shift towards a more holistic approach to wellbeing has emerged. Gone are the days of "30 minutes of exercise and an apple a day." We've begun to have broader awareness around subjects like mental health, nutrition, and mindfulness.

Practices that began as niche fads have now taken over the mainstream; yoga, meditation, and healthy eating are more accessible than ever, and have even begun trickling down into school curriculums. A new generation of people are being brought up who view holistic wellbeing not as an outlier but as the norm.

If that statement makes you skeptical, consider the following. Less than 60 years ago, another practice emerged and was dismissed as a radical new fad: jogging. Now, as anyone who has ever tried taking a lunchtime stroll along the south bank can tell you – joggers are everywhere.

Furthermore, people no longer view wellbeing as something that happens to them outside of the workplace; rather they seek to create wellness cocoons that can protect them from threats to their health, environment and emotional state – wherever they are.

One of our driving objectives at yulife is to help people not only understand how a complete approach to health can help them live happier and longer lives, but to give them practical and accessible steps to achieve them (and reward them for doing so!). In our mission to democratise wellness, we came across Dr.Chatterjee and his book, "The 4 Pillars of Wellbeing." We related to his small steps big gains mentality, and the four pillars he explores.

The four pillars are relax, eat, move and sleep. Sounds simple enough, no? Over the coming weeks we will be taking a deeper look at these pillars, and writing about what steps you can take to apply them within your own life and your workplace.
